Pope Francis is convinced that special attention is needed to ensure that those who are forced to migrate are not excluded or forgotten and can participate in the growth common to all. This is the mission that in 2017 he entrusted to the Migrants and Refugees Section.
The People's Pope
At Lampedusa and Lesbos, major transit points in Italy and Greece, Pope Francis wept with the migrants and refugees huddled there. On the plane back from Lesbos, he brought some Syrian refugee families to live in the Vatican.
WE ARE THE CHANGE THEY NEED
In response to his experience in Lampedusa and Lesbos, the Migrants & Refugees Section, directed personally by Pope Francis, is a small Vatican office to help the Church and others to accompany those forced to flee and make sure they are not shut out or left behind.
Our Team is Global
The M&R Section helps the Church worldwide to support those who are forcibly displaced by conflict, natural disaster, persecution or extreme poverty; and those who fall victim to human trafficking.
